Current Ghana Premier League players are of high quality – Ex-Kotoko defender Eric Donkor insists

Former Asante Kotoko defender Eric Donkor has spoken highly of Ghana Premier League players, insisting they are of high quality.

Some Ghanaians over the years have said that their sudden love for foreign football to the neglect of the domestic top-flight is as a result of lack of quality players in the scene

But Donkor, who is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Regional Division Two side Koforidua Suhyen Sporting Club has rejected such claims.

Speaking to Kumasi-based Akoma FM, he said, “We have quality players in the GPL who can match with players like Stephen Oduro, Ishmael Addo, Opoku Nti, and others. Richmond Lamptey is comparable to Stephen Oduro”

He continued that, “People had loved for players like Malik Jaber, Stephen Oduro, and Charles Taylor and the rest because they played in our league for a longer period of time, and it is why their names are mentioned always. However, no one can persuade me that the league is of low quality”

“The current GPL players are of high quality, but fans can’t get enough of them because they’re always leaving the country. Stephen Oduro may be slightly ahead of Lamptey because Oduro has played in the local league for a long time, but Lamptey’s future at Kotoko is uncertain at the moment” he concluded.
